Northern Pike - During spawn after ice out throughout June the Northern Pike are very active and territorial. They search out the warm shallow bays and holes that are not affected by the current from the cold lake water. There is usually a reef or point that stops the cold lake current from entering and affecting the hatch of their spawn. There also might be a feeder stream that is bringing in warmer water. During this time you will catch many more trophy pike due to the concentration of pike competing for these areas. Catch ratios are up and topping out at the 20 to 30 lb range. The Northerns can be caught on spoons, spinners, top water plugs and streamer flies. It is shallow water sight fishing, so come on up and let's go pike hunting!
Lake Trout - After ice out and throughout June the Lake Trout take advantage of the cooler waters to follow the baitfish and can be caught up shallow, in the bays, along reefs and at the shallow river inlet to the lake and around the many islands. They will also drive the schools of bait to the surface. This creates a feeding frenzy. It is a thrill to come upon one of these frenzies. The Arctic Terns will show you where the frenzy is taking place, as they dive for the bait driven to the surface by the trout. These frenzies can last for hours or minutes and provide a fish almost every cast which are usually in the 3 to 8 lb range. Though not a rule we find most of the trophy lake trout are caught in the shallows at this time of year, cruising and hunting by themselves away from the smaller, faster trout.
Walleye - June is the best fishing for walleye. They can be caught in the shallow lakes up river during their spawn. They will hit anything from spoons to spinner baits. These smaller lakes also hold some monster pike so come prepared for action. We will guide you up river you first time to make sure you are comfortable with the structure and dangers and then you will be free to go on your own the rest of the week.
Arctic Grayling - They are in the high fast running river and are easily spooked and the catch ratios are down at this time. You will however be treated to the odd lake trout or pike that are hunting the grayling. This can be an experience to remember on your light tackle in the fast current.
Lake Whitefish - Found in the Northern Pike spawning holes and in the shallow bays trying to feed on pike eggs. They are easily spooked and hard to catch at this time and can be seen fleeing from your boat in the crystal clear water. Small flies and spinners on light tackle at long distance seem to work best at this time.
